My Project Car: Sleeper sports sedan
1991 Mitsubishi Galant VR-4, #275/2000
Turbocharged, All wheel drive sport sedan
Why did I go with an odd car like this? It has the same exact drivetrain as the 1990-94 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX. Most power modifications can fit on this car, making 400hp+ to all 4 wheels with the right components.
What's nice about this car:
  • Powerful stock engine at 195hp with 5 speed manual and potential for lots of horsepower
  • Novelty of a limited production vehicle; only 2000 made in 91
  • Comfortable roomy interior, leather, power everything, power sunroof
  • No one knows it's a VR-4 unless one looks closely
  • Less annoying kiddies trying to race me at every light
  • Current performance modifications:
  • 95 pistons, 8.5:1 compression
  • 3" turbo-back exhaust
  • ACT 2600 clutch
  • ACT chromoly flywheel
  • Trans rebuilt with double-synchro 2nd gear
  • 1G T/E/L shifter with symborski bushings for shorter, precise throws
  • GReddy Profec-B Spec2 boost controller
  • Keydiver modified ECU with goodies, like: 2 step rev limiter, knock display on dash cluster, speed limiter delete, A/C cutoff at WOT, and some other things I can't remember
  • Instrumentation:
  • GReddy 60mm Boost and EGT on A-pillar
  • MMCd datalogger using color Palm IIIc
  • Performance metrics:
The project has only begun. 1/4 mile and dyno figures will be made when the time comes. In its present state, it barely makes what feels like 20hp over stock.
    Next step?
  • Considering a Garrett 50-trim turbo, such as the PTE SCM50, or a Forced Performance Green or FP3052, depending on budget or phase of the moon.
  • Unsure of internal or external wastegate; will need a custom tubular O2 housing for external
  • EVO 3 exhaust manifold
  • Spearco intercooler with custom 2.5" pipes; considering something that'll fill the entire front fascia opening
  • MAFT with blow-thru 3" MAF for performance and fuel control
  • 720cc or similar injectors
  • Supra fuel pump
  • Aeromotive adjustible FPR
